The Alaska Peony Growers Association is planning their annual peony conference January 28th, 29th and 30th in Homer, Alaska at Land’s End. I’m totally excited and want to make sure you know some of the highlights to help you make a decision about attending.
Don Hollingsworth who has been a leader in the peony field since 1968 is one of the key speakers. I don’t know anyone in the world with more knowledge about growing peony.
Gay Smith has 35 years’ experience in the floral industry from wholesale management to auction buying to industry consulting. As a technical manager for Chrysal she has personal experience with 100s’ of florists and cut flower buyers. She’ll share what Buyers are looking for from cut flower growers and pointers on post-harvest/cold chain management.
Dr. Patricia Holloway, the founder of the Alaska peony industry has retired and is going to share where all her research data can now be found, a must for all growers.
Two panels of our own growers will take place. One will be about varieties that grow in your area (where-ever that might be) moderated by Dr. Pat Holloway and a session titled ‘Alternative Marketing Options’ talking about everything from co-ops to smaller marketing groups to going it on your own moderated by Andrew Crow
Starting your own web site or need to beef it up etc., there are several seminars on this subject including taking the photos and working with art designers for media marketing. Time to get your packhouse/cooler set up, another seminar subject. With 28 different seminars, many simultaneous, there are sure to be enough to cover all the bases.
I don’t know of any other place to obtain more information about the peony industry than this conference from starting your farm to selling your peonies. I hope you make your way to Homer January 28th for the schooling opportunities and for the conference the 29th and 30th.
